When I See The Blood by Harold D. Gingerich
The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. Exodus 12: 13 The Passover sacrifice was of no value if the blood was not applied. When God instituted the Passover the children of Israel had to not only make the sacrifice, they had to apply the blood as well as eat the sacrifice. Until they did, there was no protection from the death angel (Ex. 12: 23). For believers today it is imperative that they not only acknowledge the sacrifice of Jesus Christ (the Lamb of God), but that they actively apply the blood of Jesus. Until believers apply the blood, the sacrifice is of relative value in their lives. Clearly the Passover in Exodus 12, was a foreshadowing of Calvary when Jesus the Perfect Lamb of God would lay down His life for the sins of the world. The word Passover means to spread the wings over (as to protect and preserve). Simply put, believers are being protected and preserved beneath the out-stretched wings of the Almighty (Ps. 17:8; 91: 1&2). In the Old Testament Passover, the slaying of the lamb focused on God and the sacrifice for sin. The sprinkling (applying) of the blood spoke of the believer who acts in faith and obedience to Gods command. The children of Israel were told to do three things: 1) slay a lamb (v6); 2) apply the blood (v7); and 3) eat the sacrifice (v8). Slay the best of your flock. Worship and obedience to Gods commands always requires our best! Remember it was to be a sacrifice. David said, (II Sam. 24:24c) ....... for I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God which cost me nothing. When God offered Jesus as a sacrifice for sin, He gave His very best (Eph. 11, I Pet. 1: 18,19). How dare we as believers give less than our best when it comes to God. Apply the Blood. The Passover sacrifice would have been of no value if the blood had not been applied. When the death angel came, God did not look at the sacrifice......He looked for the blood. The sacrifice of Jesus, as precious as that was, will do you no good if you dont apply His shed blood to your heart and life. Moses and the people applied the blood (Heb. 11: 28) and they saw Gods salvation. As believers we must learn to apply the blood and how to plead the blood of Jesus over our lives, our families, and life situations. The applied blood was evidence of an obedient and a prepared household. Eat the Sacrifice....Feed on the Lamb. The point here is that the Lord Jesus must become an integrated part of our lives. Jesus declared (Jn. 6: 52-58) that He was the living bread and that believers must eat of Him. In Communion we take of the bread and drink of the cup. The bread is a picture of the body of Christ. The cup is an expression of applying or sharing in the blood of Christ. It is not enough to simply believe in or acknowledge the finished work of Christ, we must enter into it and have it enter into us. It is a picture of covenant relationship. We need to Apply the Blood. Applying the blood should be a regular part of our prayer life and spiritual confession. It is not a magic formula. It is an exercise of faith and obedience. Every time we as believers apply the blood it is a re-affirmation of our covenant relationship with the Living God. Revelation 12:11, declares that the believers overcame the evil one by the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even to death. Whenever we apply the blood we are celebrating and entering into the victory of the Lamb! Brothers and sisters, that is pure spiritual gold.
